Prime Minister Narendra Modi outlined India’s MANAV Vision for AI at the ‘India AI Impact Summit 2026’ today, appealing to world leaders and technology pioneers to keep AI safe, democratic and open for all.
The acronym MANAV stands for: moral and ethical system, accountable governance, national sovereignty, accessible and inclusive, valid and legitimate.
Stating that the future of humanity will be decided by the direction AI takes in the present, the PM pushed for AI systems that are based on ethical guidance, transparent rules and robust oversight to ensure the technology doesn’t turn destructive.
PM Modi equated AI with the advent of nuclear power and technology, stating that its destructive might and transformational capabilities have been on display for the world in the past. “AI should become a solution, not destruction,” he said.
The PM also talked about national sovereignty in terms of data rights, while also appealing to global players to keep their AI codes open source, so that “AI is not a monopoly, but a multiplier”.
He also appealed to developers to not let humanity be reduced to data points and raw material for AI, stressing on the need to secure the future of work.
“India believes AI will only benefit the world when it is shared through open source codes, only then our millions of young minds will be able to improve it,” he said.
More importantly, the PM underscored the need for AI to be lawful and verifiable. To this end, he appealed that AI generated content be watermarked to contain the epidemic of deepfakes and fabricated content that is “bringing friction to open societies”.
He noted that global standards for AI are very important, and digital content should have authenticity labels along with watermarking and clear source standards, adding that this trust needs to be built preemptively in AI tools.
This, along with having child safety and family guided mechanisms built in, will ensure AI is seen as a tool of transformation, not destruction, he said.
Stressing on the fact that AI can take humanity forward only when it is built in a safe and secure manner keeping future generations in mind, PM Modi noted that the scale and speed with which AI technology is being developed needs robust oversight to ensure it is a solution to humanity’s problems.
“The real question is not what AI can do in the future, it is what to do with it in the present,” the PM noted.
