Understanding Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality

Askwiki Exclusive
Virtual Reality (VR) is all about the creation of a virtual world that users can interact with. This virtual world should be designed in such a way that users would find it difficult to tell the difference from what is real and what is not. A good example would be flight simulator, used train new pilots. VR is great for games and 3D films.

Augmented Reality (AR) is the blending of virtual reality and real life, as developers can create images within applications that blend in with contents in the real world. A good example would be Google glass, which can add a layer on street view.

So, what's the difference ?
With AR, users continue to be in touch with the real world while interacting with virtual objects around them. With VR, the user is isolated from the real world while immersed in a world that is completely fabricated.

Then, what's the similarity ?
Both virtual reality and augmented reality attempt to immerse the users in ways that detach them from the real world.

Which technology will evolve ?
Some of the latest technologies using virtual reality include Oculus Rift Crescent Bay, Samsung Gear VR and Sony Project Morpheus, while the products using augmented reality include Microsoft HoloLens and ODG Smart glasses. Another product providing a blend of both virtual and augmented reality is Google’s Magic Leap.
